Born Poonam Bartake in Pune, Maharashtra, Hamsa made her movie debut in the 2007 Telugu horror-mystery Anumanaspadam. Originally using her birth name, she was rechristened Hamsa Nandini by director Vamsy to stand out. She rose to fame with special appearances in blockbuster item songs in films like Mirchi, Atharintiki Daredi (2013), and Ramayya Vasthavayya. Notable roles include the warrior princess Madanika in the historical epic Rudhramadevi (2015) and appearances in hits like Eega (2012) and Legend (2014).

After bravely battling Grade III breast cancer diagnosed in 2021 – completing chemotherapy and inspiring many – Hamsa made a triumphant return. She founded the Yamini Cancer Foundation for awareness and support.
