Ace southern cinematographer and director Ashok Kumar Agarwal passed away Wednesday.Ashok Kumar has worked in over 100 feature films mainly in South Indian languages. He is a recipient of the National Film Award for Best Cinematography for Nenjathai Killathe (1980) and numerous state awards

He later turned director and directed four films including Super hit Abhinandana which have karthik and Shobana in lead roles.the film won Andhra Pradesh state Nandi award in two different categories. The film has garnered two state Nandi Awards, including Nandi Award for Second Best Feature Film.

He also directed award winning films like "Andru Peitha Mazhayil" (Tamil) and "Kaamagini" (Hindi) as well and has worked with several stalwarts of the Indian film industry.He served as jury member of the 43rd National Film Awards.He was well known for his association with film-makers such as P. N. Menon, Bharathan, N. Sankaran Nair, Pratap Pothan and P. Vasu

As per reports, he was undergoing treatment in hospitals in Chennai and Hyderabad over the last six months.His family recently brought him back home after his condition had deteriorated .
