Nayanthara reflects on success, failure, the unpredictability of the box office, her creative ambitions and the stars who have inspired her craft. She also shares why, after more than 80 films, she is still waiting for the role that makes her wonder: “Can I actually do this?”

From commanding the camera to building stories behind it, Nayanthara has carved out a career entirely on her own terms.

In Variety India’s latest digital cover, the actor opens up about the choices that shaped her journey — from stepping into the multi-starrer Toxic: A Fairy Tale For Grown Ups and championing women with agency on screen, to growing Rowdy Pictures, navigating motherhood and finding the drive to keep evolving.

She made her debut in the Malayalam film Manassinakkare (2003) and went on to become the “Lady Superstar” of South Indian cinema with hits across Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. Her Hindi debut came with Jawan (2023) opposite Shah Rukh Khan.

Upcoming projects include the pan-Indian Toxic (2026) with Yash, Hi, Mookuthi Amman 2 and more. Through acting and production via Rowdy Pictures, Nayanthara continues to define success on her own terms.
